HOKITIKA TENNIS CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting was held in the County Chambers on Friday, 14th October at 7.15 p.m. Dr Baird presided over a fair attendance of members, several apologies being received for unavoidable absence. ANNUAL REPORT. Owing to continuous wet weather interfering with the setting of the courts after top-dressing in October of last year, the official opeing of the season was postponed until 4th. December. The second and thirds courts were opened for play in tho middle of November, but a patch on tbe front court prevented play there till later, and even then only continual rolling and sanding permitted continuous play. On 4th. December an opening day tournament was held, and visitors from All Saints and Kokatahi Clubs were present. The winners of tbe tour-

nament were Miss Moore and Miss N. Thompson. Inter-Club matches were played with Greymoutli and Kokatahi Clubs, and a match with All Saints’ Club was abandoned, owing to rain. The first match with Greymoutli, played on IStli. December, was won by 11 games by tbe A team at Greymoutli. while the B. team playing at Hokitika lost by 12 games. On 19th. February the return match with Greymoutli was played, when the A. team at Hokitika won by 25 games, and the B. team playing at Greymoutli won by 2 games. A match played with Kokatahi at Hokitika on sth March was won, and the return match at Kokatahi was lost.

A match which had been arranged with a visiting team from Christchurch on 26th. March, the occasion of the first day excursion from Canterbury did not materialise, owing to some hitch in the arrangements in Christchurch, but it is hoped that the match will be able to be arranged during the coming season. At the commencement of the season there was a membership of 25 hieii and 27 ladies. During the year 9 men and 11 ladies joined, and 11 junior members

were admitted with restricted privileges. Seven men and five ladies resigned, and the Club membership nowstands at 27 men. 33 ladies and 11 junior members. During the year the Committee was faced with heavy expense, hut, thanks to the prompt payment of subscriptions it has been found possible to meet all obligations, which, considering that over £7O was spent on top-dressing the Courts, must be considered quite satisfactory. The Committee recommends to this meeting that improvements to the pavilion should be taken in hand at once and further recommends that the junior membership be increased to 20. The agreement of lease of the property from the Methodist Church Trustees expires on 31st. December, but no difficulty is anticipated regarding renewal for another term. The Annual West Coast Tournament will bo held in Hokitika in January next, and the new Committee acting in conjunction with All Saints’ Club will have the responsibility of the arrangements. Judging from the interest already displayed hy the Groymouth Clubs and enquiries from elsewhere a very interesting and enjoyable tournament may be confidently looked forward to. As in former years the ladies addmaterially to the social enjoyment of the game by providing afternoon ton on Saturdays, and the best thanks of the Club arc due to them for their efforts. which have been greatly appreciated by all. The report and balance sheet as read were adopted and it was resolved to give effect to the Committee’s recommendation tn improve the

pavilion. The election of officers resulted as under:—

President,—Dr .T. B. Baird. Vice-President—Air E. Partridge. Club Captain—Air T. Cagney, Secretary and Treasurer—ATr J. W. Morris. Assist.-Secretary— Afiss I’. Thompson. A'otcs of thanks wore passed .to tho old Gnnmit.trto, to Af,r (Cagney for services as auditor and to the County Council for the use of the meeting, room.
