SWIMMING.

LONDON, Oc.t 14. Mrs Gill, of Sheffield, left Capa Grislier. (France) at 9.11 o’clock yesterday morning, and swam tlie Eng- . lisli Channel, ending twenty minutes As after midnight at Shakespeare Beach. J Her swim was begun in rough weather, and continued with an occasional mist’. The breast stroke was used by Mrs Gill over most of the way, but the crawl was adopted by her when the conditions were ot the roughest. During the latter portion of her journey "the conditions were perfect. The temperature of the water off Dover was 51 degrees, the same as when Miss Gleitze swam the Channel. _ Mrs Gill was fed on the journey on malt extract. ■ On touching the shore Mj»iS-. GIU cried: “I cannot stand!” She recov- - ered, however, when given a hot V drink. There are boatmen ready to make an affidavit as to the autlieu ticity of her swim.
