Private advice announces the death at Sydney of Father Patrick Lynch, aged 69, Administrator of St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Dunedin, who later conducted missions in Ireland, Australia and the Phillipines. HOPE MAINTENANCE CASE. AUCKLAND, Oct. 13. •Judgment was given by Mr Hunt. 3.M., in a case against John William Hope. The Magistrate found the defendant’s identity had been established, and sentenced him to- six months imprisonment, the warrant to he suspended as long as a maintenance order in favour of his wife was complied with and ho pays 10s per week off the arrears.
DRUNKEN DRIVER FINED. AUCKLAND, Oct. 13. Harold AlcLoughlen, 24. driver of the. car that crashed into an electric light standard last night was fined £29 for being intoxicated while in charge of a motor car, ns a result of which Daniel McLaren, a passenger, sustained concussion of the brain. Between 10.30 and midnight a quantity of lighted paper was inalicirmslc) dropped into a mailing box at Kingslnnd Post Office and most of the mail matter therein was destroyed. NEW DAM AT WAI.PORT. DUNEDIN, Oct. 13. An important step in the future development of AVaipori, Dunedin’s source of electrical energy was taken by the City Council unanimously deciding to build a. new dam on the Waipori River at ivi estimated cost of £226,225. The height of the dam will he 110 feet.
YACHTING. DUNEDIN. Oct, 13. Challenges for the Saunders and the Cornwall Cups were issued at the first meeting of the new season of the Otago Yachting Association. A NEW BRIDGE. NEW PLYMOUTH. Oct. 13. The last obstacle to the through road communication between Taranaki and Auckland was removed today bj{ tike opening of the new bridge across the Moknu River. The first vehicle to cross was the Auckland “Sun’s” car at 12.10 this morning. Tho ceremonial opening was deferred till the House rises and Ministers are at liberty.
QUESTION OF MANAGER. AUCKLAND, Oct, 13. Tho Afanagement Committee of the Auckland Rugby Union decided to write the New Zealand Rugby Union that in its opinion the manager of the South African tour should not he confined to the Management Committee of the New Zealand Union. Tt suggests nominations he obtained from different Unions, and the selection made at a general meeting, or by postal ballot.
INJURIES PROVE FATAL. INVERCARGILL, Oct. 13. James Wilson, aged nineteen, the motor cyclist who was injured in a collision with a motor car on Sunday afternoon, died at a private hospital without regaining consciousness.
L \BOURERS FEDERATION. AUCKLAND, Oct, 13. New Zealand General Labourers Federation concluded tlioir conference It was decided to forward an emphatic protest to the Government concerning the reported changes in the Arbitration Court. In our opinion. the resolution read, a. Court constituted of three Magistrates would not have, the confidence cl workers, as neither workers nor employers would have any say in the selection of the members of the Court or any direct representation thereon. A Court constituted as at present represents the employers, workers, and general public. Magistrates with their legal training and experience would he inclined to give more importance to the legal aspect of questions submitted to them than to social and industrial aspects. ibis would not he conductive to industrial peace.
SAWMILL BURNT. OHAKUNK, Oct. 3. A fire completely gutted (inmman’s sawmill at Ohakune Junction this morning. The brigade effected a good savo of several thousand pounds ot sawn timber in the yard. The fire will he a serious blow to workers, who have been on short time during the slump. LABOUR CONFERENCE. AUCKLAND. Oct. 13. The conference of the N.Z. General Labourers’ Federation passed a resolution that this conference, representing the general labourers of the Dominion, deplores the prolonged agony which the workers are compelled to suffer as a result of unemployment and also deplore the Government’s effort, called relief and pledge ourselves by every means possible to remove this economic curse which our unfortunate members are compelled to bear. A further resolution "strongly protests against the continued arrival of immigrants, stating: ’• During the past week over three hundred immigrants have arrived, with nothing for them to do although it is reportedly stated by the Government that they have work to go to.
VICTORIA LEAGUE. NEW PLYMOUTH, Oct. 13. Delegates to the bi-annual dominion conference of the \ ictoria League which formally opened yesterday afternoon, were given a civic welcome by the Mayor this morning. The confluence. at which all the Dominion branches are represented then proceeded to business, which is expected to occupy two days •
