SAWDUST SUGAR, STRASBOURG, Aug. 16. A patent for a process for manufacturing sugar from sawdust by treating it with concentrated acid has just been filed at the German Patent Office. The process is said to produce highgrade crystallized sugar. A London scientist to whom the above message was submitted, said: It is well-known that dry cellulose of sawdust can be converted by sulphuric acid into a liquid, which can be subsequently turned into dextrose sugar. The sugar is obtained as thick syrup. A German patent has probably been applied for to protect a new process for the production of sawdust sugar on a practical scale. At present, immense quantities of sawdust are treated with acid for the distillation of wood spirit.
