SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 11

The Southern cross landed in the Mills Field here, after a non-stop flight from Tacoma. Smith piloted the airship, which carried four passengers. Smith was greeted by Anderson, Ulm and Todd. The 18th of October has been set as the tentaive date for the start of the flight to Australia. Smith has not yet decided whether to leave from the Mille Field or from Oakland airport. HONOLULU, Oct. 11.

The United States Army authorities are planning all possible assistance for Smith at Wheeler Field. They are installing a radio beacon for Ins guidance, and air and ground searchlights to help in landing, in addition to the use of the mechanical facilities of the field. A SPANIARD’S INVENTION. LONDON, Oct. 11. Senor De La Cierva, the inventor of the autogiro machine, which is able to land and take off in a very confined space, accompanied by a passenger, made his first autogiro crosscountry flight from Hamble to Winchester. The autogiro has hitherto been confined to the aerodrome, but a satisfactory hearing for the revolving arms enables extended flights. Senor Cierva is planning a ten-passenger machine. in which the Air Ministry is interested. He proposes a flight with llrancker as passenger, the machine landing on the Horse Cards Parade.
