AIVUKY’S NEW GLORIES. LONDON, Aug. 2. New glimpses of the glories of V\ estv minster Abbey, from which the grime of centuries is being removed, were obtained by the crowds who visited the building yesterday. Already the eastern transept, although still encased in scaffolding, is reappearing in its original whiteness. Steeple-jacks will shortly inspect and repair the pinnacles of the towers. This will be the most risky of all the work that is to he done, and will probably take nbont 20 years to complete. Stone ornaments are crumbling away and only close examination will Teveal the extent of the decay. Wherever necessary the damaged parts will he replaced by new stone. In the restoration of the Henry VHth chapel unsuspected mural works of great beauty have been disclosed, but this work will not he finished until 1032. An official of the Abbey said yesterday : “Anyone who comes back in 20 years from now will have difficulty in recognising the, Abbey as he knew it. There is little doubt that when the interior renovation is completed many long-hid-den paintings will be revealed.”
