OVERSEER MILLNER’S REPORT. Sir, —1 have the honour to report upon the progress of work during the month of September. NORTHERN RIDING. Malfroy’s Bridge repairs.—H. Reynolds, Bridge Foreman, directed the working party in the renewal of very defective upper and lower chords, transonies, struts and decking. Repairs will he completed about the 17th or 18th ilist. MAINTENANCE. The Roadman being transferred for a few weeks to urgent work in the Central Riding, no repairs were effected to the roads in the Northern Riding. CENTRAL RIDING. McArthur Road.—The Contractors have completed the drainage and formation, the specified distance of 42 chains 40 links, also three concrete pipe culverts, and one 18 feet span platform culvert, in a satisfactory manner. Extra work absorbing the balance of the grant, consisting of the excavation of a drain 700 links in length to drain a lagoon on the line of formation 150 links beyond the specified length of contract, was also completed. MAN IT ENANCE. Portions of Lower Kokatnlii and Koiterangi roads were repaired with gravel, the lower portion of Lower Kokatnlii road being repaired with crushed metal, blinded and well rolled with the ten-ton roller. Repairs were

lommeneed to the upper portion ot Municipal road, which was in very had cider, being cut up by heavy timber! traffic. Roadman Olderog attended to (leaning water-tables and repairs to Lake Kanieri road between Boucher's track and the lake. Defective decking was renewed on Duck Creek bridge No. I, and Harris Creek, No. 4. A defective culvert on Municipal road was repaired with a double course ot 18-inch diameter concrete pipes, and a detective box culvert on Hokitika Flat road renewed with 12 inch diameter pipes. A new drain at the upper end ot Hokitika Flat road was completed on a t for £ subsidy basis. i SOUTHERN RIDING. !

Waitangi South Bank Extension was completed, including the specified extra length to absorb the balance ot the grant. All the work was performed in a creditable manner. | MAINTENANCE. I The Roadman attended to repairs to Wanganui Flat, Haddock and Peter-j sen roads; also to the removal of wind-' blown trees from Petersen road beyond La Fontaine Creek bridge. Repairs were effected with casual labour to portions of Detour road and Sea lly road. 1 Detour road requires placing in order with tlie heavy mail drag to reduce the high crown. In this connection it would lie advisable to send one of the lorries south to effect repairs to various mails and deliver gravel for future repairs in dumps at the roadside where the material requires to he carted some distance. I

STONE CRUSHER. ! The stone crusher was operated for several days and n quantity of metal ( rushed and carted out for repairs to Lower Kokatnlii road. The crusher engine was partly overhauled and several minor defects attended to. j ROAD ROLLER. i The ten-ton roller was in use rolling crushed metal and gravel on Lower Kokatnlii road between Kanieri and Tang road, and gravel between Lang road and (‘rough's mad. ; MOTOR TRUCKS. !

No. 1 Lorry worked 23 days carting gravel and metal for road repairs, one day carting bridge timber to Koiterangi, and one day carting 24 eiglitincli and (i eighteenth-inch diameter pipes to Harihari, making a total of 21 days worked, and was under repairs for two days. The material carted amounted to 410 cubic yards of crushed metal and gravel; two loads of timber, and one load of pipes, and consumed 140 gallons of Imperial Transport and 4’ gallons of oil. No. 2 lorry worked 18 days carting gravel and crushed metal for road repairs. two days carting timber to Koitei'jingi, and one day carting pipes to Wnitalifi. On the" return journey 70 silver pine posts were carted from Totarn to Hokitika, making a total of 21 days worked, and was idle two days, and under repair for three days. The material carted amounted to 370 cubic yards of crushed metal and gravel, two loads of timber, 1 load of pipes and manuka scrub, and one load of silver pine posts, and consumed 138 gallons of Imperial Transport and 4.J gallons of oil.

CRUSHING TRANSPORT The crushing plant worked six days consuming 3 cases Cross Kerosene, 2 gallons Imperial Transport, and 1J gallons of oil. ROAD ROLLER. - The road roller was operated rolling Kokatahi road for nine days and consumed 14 ca ses of Cross Kerosene, 2 gallons of Imperial Transport, and 3 gallons of oil.
