The Planet Mercury set on October Ist at 7.18 p.m., and on October I.sth at 8.23.. p.m ; it will be well placed for observation and as its apparent magnitude at the beginning of the month will he 0.0 it should he very easily picked up. Venus rose on October Ist at 4.12 a.in., and on October 15th rises at 3.32 a. ill.; it is now a striking object in the eastern sky. The planet will attain its maximum brilliance—--4.3 on October 17th. when it will he one-tenth of a magnitude brighter than at its .last maximum on August ■sth. Mars will be too close to the sun to be seen during the month. Jupiter rose ’on October Ist at ml p.m., and rises on October 15th at 4.0 p.m. ; it is now of apparent magnitude— 2.5 and will after this month steadily decline in brightness. Saturn set on'October Ist. at 10.47 p.m.. and on October loth at 5.95 p..m. The planet Neptune will he within two minutes of arc of tile bright star Regains on October 26th. and will rise that morning about 2.36 a.m.
