The Directors <>T the National Insurance Company of New Zealand have decided to recommend to the shareholders that the existing £6 shares he sub-divided into £1 shares. X.Z. FARMERS’ MEETING. CHRISTCHURCH. Oct. 1. At their annual meeting the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-op. to-day adopted the report with little discussion. Tho Directors announced a dividend of 6 per cent to first preference shareholders and after paying this, £22,006 will he carried forward to the profit and loss account. The Chairman said he hoped during tho coming year to, pay dividends of A and li shares also.
.MAIL BAG THEFT. HAMILTON, Get. 1. There was an important development to-day in connection with tho mailbag which disappeared from Frankton Railway Station on September 3rd. The Hamilton police arrested Harold William Melville Taylor, a married man, and an agent by occupation. He is charged with the theft of the hag and its contents, which have not been recovered. The hag contained lion-negotiahle cheques totalling about £60,000. NEW ZEALAND’S ALPS. AUSTRIAN PROFESSOR'S VIEW. WELLINGTON, Sept. 20. “New Zealand is a most interesting country to the geologist. It has many features that; are unique, while its thermal regions are full of wonders which surpass those ol Yellowstone Park. It is also of much interest to the botanist and ethnologist.” This is the opinion of Professor F. X. Schaffer, who is director of the Natural History 'Museum of Vienna, and professor- of geology ill iho University of Vienna.
“I have seen most ol the mountain ranges of the world.” he added, “and I consider tho Southern Alps fo he the most imposing in the world. They have altitude, steepness, slope and rugged li ess.”
The professor said that if the New Zealand Alps were in Europe there would ho a nelectric railway to tlieir base and a chain of hotels would exist.
