SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
UTILISATION OF DOMINION COALS WELLINGTON, Sept. 19. Negotiations between the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and the New Zealand Coal Mine Owners’ Federation have resulted in the establishment of a fund of £2OOO to enable fuller research to be made into the more extended utilisation of New Zealand coals and into their suitability for various purposes. The fund, which will be available for three years, is made up of annual contributions of £IOOO each from the Government and the Coal Mine Owners’ Federation, and a programme of work for the period has been mapped out. A feature will be the establishment of a bureau of information for fuel utilisation, which will keep in touch with the results of research work in other countries, and provide up-to-date information on the subject. Assistance in that direction will be forthcoming from a liaison officer, Air 11. O. Askew, a New Zealander who is working at the fuel research station at Greenwich, and who will report on the application of work at that station to New Zealand coal and New Zealand conditions.
