Tillyard of the Cawtliron Institute (Nelson) has been invited by the Commonwealth Government to visit Australia and advise the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research upon any organisation which it should adopt against insect pests and noxious weeds. RIVERINA AFLOAT. SYDNEY, Sept. 19. Advices received by a member of the syndicate which purchased the stranded Riverina, that the vessel was refloated, and ns soon as coaled will proceed under her own steam to Sydney where she is clue on Friday next. S.S. RIVERINA. SYDNEY, Sept, 19. The latest advices state that cho liner Riverina has not yet been completely refloated. The vessel is still in the breakers, and it is estimated that it will be three weeks before she will reach deep water. Supplies of coal are being now rushed to the stranded ,sliip in die event of her being refloated earlier than lias been anticipated. There is no explanation forthcoming in connection with last night’s report that the vessel was again afloat, but it is thought that it was due to the mullilation of a telegram from the scene of tho salvage operations.
MURDER VERDICT SYDNEY, Sept. 9. To-day an inquest was held on Cnrnielo Caraei, an Italian whose death occurred on Sept, fil'd. Tho deceased, a machinist, was fatally shot while working a circular saw in a wood turner’s shop at St. Peters that morning. His fellow employees rushed the man to a hospital, while others held a man who had a smoking revolver in his hand till the police arrested him. The other Italian, Salvator Scalisi, has been arrested and charged with murder. r l'he Coroner returned a verdict of wilful murder against Salvator Scalisi. whom lie committed 'for trial.
WALTER BENTLEY’S END. SYDNEY, Sept. 19. Mr ’Walter Bentley, the well kilo ;n Shakesperian actor and teacher of elocution, who had been in ill health for the past seven months, was found dead in his rooms in the city to-day, with a bullet wound in his head, and a revolver in his left hand. The late Mr Bentley had had a most distinguished career. Ho was 79 years of age.
N.S.W. POf-iITICAb SUIT. SYDNEY, Sept. 19. Hon. Mr Willis, vice-president of the Legislative Council, has issued iwo writs, each claiming ten thousand sterling damages against Mr P. J. Mi'ialian (who is opposing Premier Lang at Auburn), and the “Daily Guardian" newspaper for alleged defamation and alleged libel respectively, in connection with the bribery charges (cabled on the IGtli) as being made by Mr M.in all an against certain Government members of Parliament.
SYDNEY WOOL SALES. SYDNEY, Sept. 19. At the wool sales to-day there was strong competition, and the market ruled firm at late- rates for all descriptions. Good clearances were made and greasy merino sold to twen-ty-ninepence. CHILDREN FATALLY BURNT. SYDNEY, Sept. 19. As the result of a fire in a tent at Newtown near Narrominc, a girl aged two and a habv of four months were fatally burned. A bov of four was also burned, but is expected to recover.
