THE IRISH ELECTIONS
(Australian & N.Z. Cable Association,
AIR JINKS DEFEATED. LONDON, Sept. 18. Mr Jinks (Irish Parliament fame) was not elected for Sligo. “TIMES” COMMENT. LONDON, Sept. 18. “The Times” Dublin correspondent says:—The De Valeraites have been far more successful in the elections than was expected. This largely has been owing to the Roman Catholic Hierachv’s complete silence concerning the oath. If the Bishops had condemned Mr De Valera and bis followers of perjury, when they entered the Dail Eireann, the De Valeraites would now bo greatly reduced. The absence of an episcopal announcement, and ignorance on the part of the masses misled the latter regarding the Republicans’ propaganda,. They decided that silence meant approval. It is also obvious that those who had lost faith in Mr Do Valera outnumbered those who were determined to vote for the Opposition at any cost. If a political crisis is precipitated, it must be settled by Parliamentary means. No party funds are available for further elections. It is clearly shown that the Free State has not yet ? reached that stage of political responsibility that is necessary for proportional representation and the exercise of adult suffrage.
STATE OF PARTIES. LONDON, Sept. 19
At midnight the Free State Government parties held 62 seats in the Dail Eireann, and the Opposition 56 seats. The details are as follows: GOVERNMENT PARTIES. Government 48 Independents 16 Farmers’ Party 4 62 OPPOSITION PARTIES. De Valeraites 41 Labourites H Others 4 56 The others are unchanged. COSG HAVE SAFE. (Received this day at 8 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 19. Despite the diminution of strength of the small groups, there is every indication that an election deadlock is not likely. The Government has more than a majority of four or five over the Fiannn Fail. Already it is hinted the remedy is n working understanding between the two big parties. The election cost £130.000 and Ireland does not want another.
LONDON, Sept. 19. Among the Irish oi'ecteds are Air Osmond Gratton and Air Esmonde, for the Division of Wexford. ELECTION NEWS. (Received this day at. 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 19.
