DAVIS CUP GOES. NEW YORK, Sept. 17. Yesterday afternoon the Davis Cup was taken aboard the steamer “France,” and was presented to M. Gillou, the Manager of the French Davis Cup team, after suitable inscriptions and a parade, which led down Fifth Avenue, New York, to the ship pier. A crowd filled the streets as four automobiles, decked with French flags, and carrying the French' team and various United States tennis officials, paraded to the ship’s side, escorted by a motor-cycle police squad. It was announced later that M. Cochet and l\f. Gillou will sail to-day, while Borotra and Brugnon will sail a week hence.
William Johnson announces that he is through with the Davis Cup competitions, owing to the physical strain, and to business reasons.
LACOSTE BEATS TILDEN. NEW YORK, Sept. 17. La cos to retained tho United States National Turf Court Championship by defeating Tildcn 11—ft, 6—3, 11—9. NEW YORK, Sept. 17. Lacoste’s- victory over Tildcn appeared to demonstrate the superiority of one of the most accurate figures in tennis over a hard lighting, brilliant, but erratic opponent. Tildcn led in tlio early phases of each set, but the Frenchman was the. steadier, and the American’s errors proved fatal. Tilden’s old flashing style, with his bombardment service, appealed to tho eye, but Laeosto won every volleying deal, his steadiness assuring that he would return tho ball and push his opponent to the limit.
