Mrs Florence C'ookson was knocked down by a train at Gladstone Road crossing, Mount Albert, dying from her injuries in the Auckland Hospital. She was a widow, aged 58 years, and resided at Mount Albert. ROAD RACES. WELLINGTON, Sept. 17. The Bennett Memorial Shield road race, of seven miles, was won l>y A. L. Stevens (Scottish Harriers) with Silver (Scottish) second, Andrew (Hutt) third, (Time 36mins. 29 secs. The A Grade teams race was won by Wellington Harriers (23 points), with Scottish (34 points) second, Hutt \ alley (35 points) third.
HORSEMAN BADLY INJURED. CHRISTCHRCH, Sept- 17. 'I nomas Alfred Wood, a married man, of Harewood, was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital late on Saturday afternoon, suffering from concussion and facial injuries. He was riding a horse through tho Square when the animal bolted down Colombo street, and, falling, threw the rider heavily. Wood’s condition is serious, and ho has still not regained consciousness. A TRAGEDY. WANGANUI. Sept. 18. On Saturday evening Hector Burgess, aged 25. son "of Mr A. S. Burgess, a prominent business man, was found dead at his home, with a service rifle beside him. It is stated that he had suffered from ill-health for some time.
FARMHOUSE BURNED DOWN. AUCKLAND, Sept. 18. A farmhouse at Hawick, owned by Robert Milieu, and occupied by his son and family and two farm hands, was destroyed" by fire early on Saturday morning. The occupants had a. narrow escape. The house was insured for 'JBOO and the furniture for £SOO. MARRIED MAN’S SUICIDE. AUCKLAND, Sept. 17. Burton Bell Revege, aged 58, married. died in hospital yesterday from the effects of poisoning. At tno inquest a verdict of suicide was returned, ft was stated that deceased was depressed because be was unable to find work. LAUNCH IN TROUBLE. ROTORUA, Sep. 19. On Sunday on the Government round trip, the launch while voyaging from Wairon. to meet passengers coming from Wnimangu, met the heavy seas and was swamped, the pumps failing. The crew donned their lifebelts, and set a course for the shore, which was reached as the launch foundered. There were no passengers aboard.
