CYCLING.

PROFESSIONAL CYCLE RACE

(Australian & N.Z. Cable Association.) SYDNEY, Sept. 18. One hundred and forty-three riders competed in the Dunlop Amateur and Professional Cycle Road Race from Goulburn to Sydney. Heavy rain fell over the whole course on Friday, filling holes in the road and making very slippery conditions. Although it was line when the riders left Goulburn, rain was experienced in tho first twenty miles and thence for over hundred miles accompanied by a cold southerly wind. Tn the professional race, Herd took the lead before ten miles were covered, and for 113 miles was compelled to ride unpaced. He rode a great race from tho start and at Mossvalc was leading by nine miles Tho gen real opinion was that he would not he able to keep up the fast pace as lie was forty-eight years of age, but he was able to maintain the long lead and increasing this advantage, won with ease. In the amateur race, Shaw rode strongly throughout and moving up at Afossvale obtained the lead at Picton. He retained leadership with ease, winning comfortably. Results:

Professional:—P. J. Herd (N.S.AV.) 1, D. J. Anderson (Victoria)' 2, R. Compton (N.S.AV.) Time 6hrs 44mins. Fastest time was recorded by P. Osborne, who covered tho distance in shrs. 56mins., 40 l-ssecs., reducing all previous records. Amateur:—J. A. Shaw (N.S.AA r .) 1. S. O’Sullivan (N.S.AV.)2, A. Pontifox (N.S.AV.) Time 6hrs 33mins 39 1-5 sees. Fastest time was recorded by R. AY. Lamb (Victoria), Clirs Omins 44 1-5 sees.

PERTH ROAD RACE. PERTH, Sept. 18. The cycle road race from Beverley to Perth, 116 miles, was won by F. James in shrs 35mins. A protest lodged against the winner on grounds that he deviated from the proper course, after hearing, was adjourned.
