RUSSIANS DENOUNCED

LONDON, July 28. “1 am not prepared to i'ead our men into a morass,” deci'ared Air Herbert Smith, the president of the Aimers’ Federation, at yesterday’s conference* of the federation at Southport, alter a snceeh by Alt* Arthur Horner, a. South Wales delegate, urging members to fight the Trade Disputes Bill now and ridiculing the idea of constitutional action.

“Neither am 1 prepared,” continued Mr Smith, “to ask the rank and file once more to go through the terrible and cruel suffering of last year even to oust a Jingo Government. 1 am not •prepared to take any step that will risk the loss of all we possess in our 'Constitution. (Cheers).

“Give us ginger, as much as you like. But do it in private. Don’t yoii Communists continue to damn tins movement as you are doing. You are doing as much harm and more than George Spencer (the leader of the Notinghamshire miners.) “I have spent some time in Russia, and 1 confess that had 1 been born under the Soviet system, I would ha\e been a revolutionist against that system. (“Hear, hear.”) “In Russia the workers are little more than slaves. They have no \ ote. We can get all we want if we intelligently use our vote. “To make a comparison between this country and Russia, is ridiculous.’ Mr Smith referred to the fact that the conference had to discuss a resolution ns to whether or not the Communists should be expelled, and said he regretted that that resolution was not also going to he taken in public. “If the Communists do not like our system and methods.” ho said, “let them get out of it. They arc better out of the movement than in. Wo don’t want such men ns those inside the federation.

“I am not prepared to vole mr a revolution and destruction without attempting to solve our problems m some other way. 1 do not believe that revolution is at all necessary, because T honestly believe that within the intelligent use of our vote we can defeat this Bill without resorting to any suen thing as a general strike or revolution in any way.” A resolution denouncing the Bill reactionary was carried unanimously
