THE LATE MR POLLOCK
Further particulars of the demise of the late Michael Pollock in Sydney show that deatli cam© suddenly to both himself and his life-long companion. John Solomon (his brother-in-law). Both contracted colds almost simultaneously and for a while were under medical’ care, but in the end the doctor stated they were better and might sit up in the suu the next day. Unfortunately, neither felt inclined to bo up the following day and as they both appeared worse, the doctor was recalled. On examination of tl W-patients he gave no hope, the hearts of both being affected seriously by the strain of the illness. Within a very short time Air Pollock passed away, and Air ’Solomon about two hours later. Both had been in bed less than a week, and each illness started with an attack of bronchitis. Air Pollock i’ived so long in Hokitika that he was known particularly well. As a. member of the firm of Pollock and Bevan lie was known all up and down the Coast and beyond. Mr Solomon had been a traveller for tlio firm, and he, too, was known widely. There were few enterprises or institutions in and about Hokitika, with which Air Pollock had not been connected at one time' or another. He was a prominent freemason, and had been cast Alaster of the Pacific Lodge, E.C., Past Master of the Mark Lodge, Past First Principal of the Royal Arch, for 40 years Grand Treasurer of the District Grand Lodge of AVcstland, and ai'so Deputy to the Grand Lodge. In connection with public and local bodies, Air Pollock has for many years a member of the Westland Land Board, Vice-President of tho Hokitika Savings Bank, Treasurer of the Westland Hospital. member of the Hokitika Harbour Board, and also of the Hokitika Benevolent Society. He was also a Justice of the Peace for New Zealand, as well as an assessor for both the New Zealand Government and the AVestland County Council. Mr Pollock was a director of several local companies, including the Hokitika Gas Coy, AA’ostland Steam Tug Coy, Greenstone Sluicing Coy, Rangitoto Silver Mine Coy, Caledonian Quartz Mining Coy, and others. He also was President of tho AVestland Hebrew Congregation, and likewise a trustee of that organisation.
