REVISED TARIFF
SOME OF IT FEATURES. BY TELEGI!APJI MESS ASSN*., COPYRIGHT.
WELLINGTON, Sept. 13. Tho following is the precis of the principal features of the new tariff brought down to-night:—-Timber.—Rough sawn (other than Australia) will pay os per 100 sup. ft., instead of 2s per 100 sup. ft., but rough sawn timber in pieces not less than 25 feet long, and having a minimum cross
sectional area of not less than 150 square inches, will pay 3s per 100 ft-., instead of 2s as Hitherto. Spirits, wines, tobacco, cigarettes and cigars.—The duty remains the same as at present.
Tea.—No change. Biscuits.—Were 2d per lb; new duty, 20 per cent ad valorem. Cocoa.—Was 3d per lb; now 20 per cent ad val. Confectionery.—Was 2d per lb ; now 20 per. cent ad val. Preserved Fish.—No change.
Fruit.—Fresh and Dried.—No change. On fruit preserved in syrup, the British remains the same, while tho foreign rate is increased from 40 per cent to 45 per cent ad valorem. James, Jellies, Marmalade and Preserves.—British rate remains the same, while the foreign rate is increased from 3d per lb to Id. Matches.—No change. Pickles.—British rate unchanged, hut foreign rate is increased from 3s per gallon to Is Gd. On sauces, the British rate is unchanged, and the foreign rate is increased from 4s per gal. to 6s. Chemicals and Medicinal Preparations.— The foreign rate is increased from 35 per cent to 40 per cent ad val.
Apparel and Hosiery.—The British rate is not changed; the foreign is increased from 40 per cent to 45 per cent ad ve.i'. Drapery.—The British rate is not changed, while the foreign rate is raised from 35 per cent to 40 per cent. Carpets.—'ihe British rate is raised from 20 per cent to 25 per cent. Tho foreign rate is raised from 35 per cent
to Id per cent. Linoleum.—The rate at present is 20 per cent on British and ,‘ld per cent on foreign. Up to June 30th, 1923, the rate will be 20 per cent if British, and 40 per cent if foreign; whilst thereafter linoleum will enter free if British, and at 20 per cent duty il
foreign. Hats and Caps.—Tho foreign duty is increased from JO per cent to Id per cent.
lanes and Ribbons.- —Foreign rate is increased from 3d per cent to 40 per cent.
Millinery.—The foreign rate increased from 40 per cent to 45 per cent. Drapery, Umbrellas, Haberdashery, Woollen i’ieec Goods.—The rate on British goods remains at 20 per cent, that on foreign goods is increased from 35 per cent, to 40 per cent. Footwear.—There is no change in the duty.
Pi’aster Pulp Sheets, Blaster Board
and similar material's.—Tho former rates were:—British 10 per cent; foreign 20 per cent. The new rates are: British 20 per cent., foreign 40 per cent.
Ohinawaro. Earthenware and Porcelain Ware (viz., howls, cups, saucers, plates, jugs, dishes, teapots, suitable for table use). —The present rates are: British 20 per cent., foreign 35 per cent. The rates to June 30th, 1928. will lie: British 20 per cent., foreign 40 per cent. After June 30th, 1928, the- British goods will be free, and
foreign 20 per cent. On other cliinawnre (not for table use), glassware, flooring and hearth tiles, lamps and lanterns, the British rate remains the same, and tho foreign rate is increased from 35 per cent to 40 per cent. Fancy Goods and Toys, Sporting Requisites, Jewellery, Plate and Plated ware.—Tho foreign rate is increased from 35 per cent to 40 per diet. Cinematograph Films, foreign, othei than those suitable for use only with home cinematograph, will pay 3d per foot, instead of Id per foot. British films remains free.
Pianos and .Musical Instruments generally, including Phonographs an Gramophones.—The foreign rate is raised from 35 per cent to 40 per cent. Lawn Alnwers.—The foreign rate is increased from 35 to 40 per cent. Tools.—The foreign rate is increased from 10 per cent to 20 per cent. Hardware.—The foreign rale is in. creased from 35 per cent to >4O per cent., and after June 30th, 1928, Hritisli corrugated sheet iron will he free. The foreign rate on printing type and printing materials is raised from 10 per cent to 20 per cent., and the foreign rate on stereotypes, electrotypes, matrices, half-tone and line blocks is raised from 40 to 45 per cent. The tariff on bieyci'es, tricycles and motor cycles is unaltered. Linseed Oil.—The rates are increased from 6d per gallon (British) and Is per gallon (foreign) to 9d per gallon, British and Is 3d per gallon foreign. | Petrol remains free.
British white lead will now pay 6s per cwt, instead of 10 per cent ad val. Ready mixed paints will pay 20 per cent (British) and 30 per cent (foreign) instead of 15 per cent (British) and 25 per cent (foreign). Crown seals for bottles will pay 20 per cent if British, and 40 per cent
if foreign, instead of being free and 20 per cent, respectively, as at present.
