HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 9th
The bi-monthly meeting of the Council was held at 7.30 o’clock. Present— His Worship the -uayor (G. A. Perry, Esq.), Messrs W. Jeffries, J. King, E. W. ITeenan, T. W. Duff, A. C. Armstrong, D. J. Evans, G. Heinz. Apology was made for the absence of Dr Teichelmann and Mr Elcock. The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed and the outward correspondence was approved. IN WA B D COB it E-SPONDENi. E. From Airs J. L. W. Giese, Hampden Street, relinquishing Municipal Reserve. No. 570, Davie Street.—Received ; to be offered Mr Peck. From Town Clerk, Thames, forwarding copy of Thames Diamond Jubilee Souvenir publication to be placed M Public Library.—Received and agreed to.
From B. Macklcy. Kahikatca. in reference to overdue rates.—Received and no actum taken. From W. Connor, slaughterman. Abattoirs, applying for fourteen days annual leave.—Received and request granted, Abattoir Committee to arrange. From X.Z. Refrigerating Co. Ltd.. Christchurch, notifying that 57 sheep bad been delivered into Hokitika during month of August.—Received.
From McKay and Son, Hokitika, drawing attention to the condition of Tailored Street in the vicinity of their business premises and requesting that the matter of a clean-up be considered. —Received and referred to Public Works Committee. Mr Jeffries suggested the whole of the street l:c cleaned up. Agreed to. From AV. Keller, asking permission to extend portion of upper storey of hotel.—Received and agreed to. FOREMAN’S BEPORT. 1 beg to report the following work was carried out during the month. Britton Street between Woi’d Street and Gibson Quay was cleared of growth. Park St. between Hail and Sale Sts. cleared on both sides of growth and the drains cleaned out. The drain in Weld St. on the south side of Cass Square was cleaned out for a section of three chains, breaks were lepafroit io Sewell and Fiii.herhert Sis. drains, and liie' covering being rotten was renewed. Hampden St. drain in front of . Stale School was attended 10. Drains were put in at the felimiing ! laces: MniuU’s Brewery. Airs Palmer’s in Benley St., and \Y. Stopforth’s in Tailored St. .Joliie Si. on the north end was gravelled. A ccli- nof Hampden Si. footpath between Davie and Joliie Si -:.
was gravelled with screened gravel. Curbing was put down in Vi old r-i. between Sewell St. and the lailway crossing, and the footpath gravelled. New pies in the water main were put in Hull St. near Si.e-Kiths and in rpper Cibson’s Quay near Ivrako "sky’s. Two water connections were put in, one in Gibson’s Quay and one in North Reveil St.
Twenty-four 18-inch concrete pipes and seven 1-loot were made during the month.
The morgue was painted outside and the slab cleaned and painted. Leaks in vaiiolts parts of the t- wil were repaired.
Crossings wore put in at Dr Toichelmann’s in Hampden St. and at Newman’s Garage. Average water in reservoir 711. Oin. —Received. REPORT OF COMMITTEE OF RESERVES.
Your Committee met and begs to report as follows :
1. That the Clerk revise the list oT occupied reserves with a view to increasing the rents where considered necessary, and report as to the powers of sale where it i- determined to offer land for sale.
2. That with respect to Cass Square the following work he authorised. Main vehicle approach off Stafford Street to lie curbed and ornamented. invasion of grass grub in vicinity of Cenotaph to lie dealt with. Repairs to pavilion to be carried out, and shutters authorised to be attended to. Later, building to ho painted. Defective pole used for giant stride to he removed ; and seats near Cenotaph to lie repainted. Trees to he planted where missed along Stafford, Brittan, and Meld Streets, and defined by stakes. —Received. Small works proposed were authorised, an estimate to he obtained of the cost in connection with the pavilion shutters and repairs. Mr Evans said some financial assistance was expected from the Beautifying Society in respect to the ornamentation mid painting proposed, while the gardener would carry out several of the matters referred to. The concrete curbing would ho attended to when Stafford Street footpath was being (iirhed.
GENERAL. Tlie Abattoir report stated 353 animals had been slaughtered, of which 2 cows had been condemned. The receipts were £6l 17s 6d. as against £o2 13s 6d, for the same period last year. —Received, some small requirements to bo obtained. The Acting Town Clerk reported that the occupancy of reserves 5.35 Sale Street and 476 upper Revell Street, he determined, and the arrears of rent written off. Agreed to, the sections to he open for fresh leasing.. The Council rose at 8.5 p.m.
