SCULLING.

SC U LUNG CHA MPIONSHIP GOODSELL WINS. (Australian & N.Z. Cable Association.) (Received this day at 11.0 am.) VANCOUVER, Sept. 5. Goodsell defeated Barry for the world’s sculling championship at San Francisco.

Tho unofficial time was 24min. Goodsell finishing ten lengtlis ahead VANCOUVER, Sept. 5.

In a choppy sea and against adverse weather conditions, Goodsell walked away with the world’s championship sculling race, heating Barry by ten lengths ill twenty-four minutes thirteen seconds. The race was rowed against a strong head wind, following a heavy rain storm. Goodsell finished as fresh as a daisy. He started with a stroke of 32 for the first third of a mile. Barry held the lead at less than half a mile and then Goodsell forged ahead and before a mile was five lengths ahead. At the second mile lie was eight lengths ahead. With Barry showing signs of a spurt, Ihe Englishman was up to about three lengths, but he quickly lost it again. From then on there was never any question of the result. Goodsell spurted using a twenty-two stroke lo the minute and steadily increasing the distance between them, passed the winning post ten lengths ahead.

Ho rested for a few seconds and paddled ashore. Seen after the race Goodsell said—-‘‘Tell my friends in Australia that of all the men ,1 have rowed against, Barry is the best sport L have met. It was a good race, hut the water was very choppy.” A great crowd surrounded the winner on his arrival and many Australians were present. The victor was greeted by cries of "Cooee.” tlocdsell expressed tar more cancel'll over tho fate of the occupants of a launch which was burned, than lie iliil over the race. A report reached him that a baly had been burned to death and it made him quite sad. and when told the report. was erroneous his rising spirils were quite discernahle.
