EFFECT OF STRIKE. BRISBANE, Sept. G
Owing to the stoppage in the railway service the streets of Brisbane are crowded with motor cars and buses of all descriptions. Almost every car owner drove to town. There is a difficulty in finding room to park cars in the city thoroughfares. At knocking off time lines of motor buses are rushed by people anxous to reach their homes. These, together with trams, coped very satisfactorily with the traffic.
A mass meeting of railway men at Brisbane and Ipswich reaffirmed their solidarity. It was indicated that twenty tram buses were running today.
The oil steamer Penua with fifty thousand eases of motor spirit and kerosene is anchored off Townsville, because the cargo cannot he discharged owing to the strike. It is stated the carters decline to deliver it from the wharf into the store. SYDNEY’S CATHEDRAL. SYDNEY, Sept. G.
The transfer ol Saint Andrew’s historic Anglican Cathedral alter long negotiations from George Street to a site in MacQuarrie Street, now occupied by tile Mint and District Court now seems assured, the Government having signed an agreement with the church authorities covering the transfer. In addition to the new site the Government will pay the Cathedral authorities a half a million sterling as compensation. LOAN DECLINED. SYDNEY, Sept. G. The City Council has declined an offer of a two million sterling loan at oi per cent for one year made by the National City Bank of New York. Certain conditions including the shortness of the term were considered not suitable.
