AVIATION.
(Australian Press Association & Sun. COURTNEY’S FLIGHT. LONDON, Sept. 4. The “Gazette” says Courtney’s flight vindicates Courtney’s contention that long overseas flights must tie made in flying boats, not land machines, because they can shelter in the nearest harbour, instead of returning almost to the starting point. Also they must have wireless and complete navigating equipment. A FAKED AIR CLAIAI. PAULS, Sept. 4. A sensation was caused in aviation circles by the announcement by the Aero Club of France that the claim of Callizi (cabled on CUth August) was not substantiated. It is understood an official barograph was placed in the tail of the machine, which registered little more than twelve thousand feet. The Aero Hub requested Calizo to appear before them on .Monday.
A fraud. PARIS, Sept. 4. Callizo, formally charged with an attempt to hoax tho Aero Club, broke down when he confessed that he tampered with the barograph, and only reached a f:action of the height claimed. The discovery was due to the placing of a secret second barograph unobserved bv Caflizo authorities. Suspicions were aroused when lie landed at Le Bourget only three hours after leaving Lebue aerodrome. PARIS, Sept. 5. The American Callizo inserted a roll of paper in a solid barograph containing curves indicating an altitude of 13,090 metres which curves were drawn with invisible ink. While he was in tho air, Callizo developed invisible writing by using a vaporised elieinicr.tl process identical with that used by spies for secret messages in war time. Chemists readily discovered this trick. ANOTHER BRITISH FLY. LONDON, Sept. 5. An Imperial Airways pilot, Captain Mein tosh, accompanied by Engineer Pieicy. Inis arrived at .Dublin aboard tbe Fokker monoplane “Zeuia.” a sif-
ter aircraft to Princess I.mveustein's “Saint Raphael.” He makes an early departure for New York, lie is accompanied by Captain 'Anthony Wroford, the Home Secretary, Sir AY. Joynsnn Hicks’ cousin.
