STEAMER WAINUI
•‘Keelson” writes to nn Auckland paper:—“Between 30 and 40 years ago the steamer Wainui. now lying idle in the Auckland Harbour, was the crack vessel in the western coastal trade. She plied with passengers and cargo between Greymonth, Westport, Nelson and Pic-ton. and her skipper. Captain Lambert, was a well-known figure on the. coast. In the ’nineties .the Wainui’s hows were badly damaged by striking the rocks known as the Beef Barrels, near D’Urville Island. She had to lie beached in Waikawa Bay, where temporary repairs were made. The vessel was taken subsequently to Wellington, where a new •nose’ was built. After the barque Wni-iti was capsized and dismasted in Kaipara Harbour twenty years ago, the Wainui towed the vessel to Lyttelton. where she was converted into a hulk.”
