(Australian <& N.Z. Cable Association.) SWIMMING CONTEST. (Received this day at 9.30 a.m.) OTTAWA, Aug. 31. The cold waters of Lake Ontario defeated many of the world’s best swimmers in the 21 miles swim for prizes to which William Wriglcy and tlic Canadian National Exhibition each contributed 25,000d01. Only fifty competitors remained in the water for 6 hours out of 250 starters. Many favourites retired early. Among tho early quitters were Edward Keating, Harold Waters (Now Zealand), Bryon Summers, John O’Halloran and Georgo Clayton. Ernest Vierkotter led by three-quarters of a milo after 14 miles was covered. Geo. Michel was in 6th. place. PRINCE'S WHEAT CROP. OTTAWA, Aug. 31. It is officially announced at Calgary that tho Prince of Wales signed a contract with the Alberta Wheat Pool covering a thousand acre crop.
