A sudden temporary return of summer was responsible for a rush of Channel swimmers, ranging from Miss Jamscn, a seventeen year old Dane, to Dr Schiff, a sixty-five year old German. Others included Misses Macl.ellun, Hawke, Harding, Mrs YVeidan (England). All started from Grisnez at various times in the morning, but were forced to abandon owing to a choppy sen. MacLellnn, of Harley St., was in the water 11 hours and covered 13 miles. Jamscn took cramp after four and a-half hours. Harding was in seven and a half hours, and swam the last hour in a state, of coma and collapsed ns he was dragged into a tug. lie was unconscious for an hour. Hawke was far out of the course after 7 hours and Soliiff after seven hours battling with cross currents became faint and was rescued with difficulty. Dover cliffs were crowded with disappointed onlookers.
