GERMAN NEWS.

(Australian & N.Z. Cable Association.) ARMY OF OCCUPATION. BERLIN, Aug. 28. Press official circles are disappointed at tile reduction of the army of occupation by only one thousand, which is not regarded as a fulfilment of the promises of November, 1925. Tho “Alio Germania Zeitung ” says Sir A. Chamberlain has again bowed to tho orders of General Focli, and Lord Cecil’s protests will disappear into the French General Staff’s archives. Friends of the League of Nations and Locarno policy proved weak and Focli is triumphant. It will have to bo decided whether Locarno shall live or die.

Democratic papers are especially hitter. The “ Germania ” asserts the world has lost its sense of humour, since it still i.s talking of Germany threatening France’s security. BRITAIN’S ATTITUDE. LONDON, Aug. 28. The Daily Express Paris correspondent states: “There is really a reservation to the withdrawal of .eight thousand French troops from the Rhineland. That figure is conditianal on the nominal strength of the French army being fifty-six thousand, whereas it, i.s really less. _ Therefore the 'number eight thousand must he correspondingly diminished. “Le Journal” commenting on the Anglo-French Rhineland agreement, declares that the best passage in tho British note is that which states categorically that the question of the Rhineland forces must bo dealt with by the Allies alone, and adds:—“Consequently there can be no discussion at Geneva with tho Germans regarding a. largo reduction. The' advantage of Britain making such a definite statement. it says, outweighs the French sacrifice. The present reduction, it adds, brings the forces on tho Rhine to tho irreducible minimum.”
