CHINESE TROUBLE.

SOUTHERNERS SUCCESS. NORTHERNERS LOSE TEN THOUSAND. (Australian it N.Z. Cable Association. SHANGHAI, Aug. 28. Following the Northerners attempt on Friday to cross tho Ynngtszo and launch an attack on Nanking, the present stronghold of tho Nationalists, Southerners who crossed bail approxi- ' mately ten thousand either killed or taken prisoners, the wounded being murdered. This shows the determination of the Southerners to fight instead of fleeing. Though relieved, their resistance will ho short-lived, as tho Northerners drive was badly managed and it was a simple task for tho Soutnorners to wipe out the small foico which crossed the river and was never reinforced, through want of transportation. Southerners killed the general commanding and regained Lungton station, midway between Nanking and Chinkinng, re-opening railway communication with Shanghai which was interrupted on Monday owing to the cutting of tho railway by northern spies. A second crossing is anxiously ' awaited. Meanwhile Northern artillery continues to bombard Nanking continuously. The damage to Nanking ana Pukow cities is increasing, the gunners improving hy practice. Ships passing run great risk's. Warships convoy them.
