CHINESE TROUBLE.
(Australian & N.Z. Cable Association.) NORTH ERN ER S O F FEN ST VE. (Received this day at 9.30 a.m.) SHANGHAI, Aug. 20. The Northerners have launched a general offensive; against the Southerners, crossing the Yangtsze under cover of a fog and landing at Lungtan, a small town midway between Nanking and Chinkiang, for the purpose of cutting off tho retreat of ’Southerners to Shanghai. The crossing was carried out in eight heavily laden river craft, towed by launches. A portion was repelled when Southern sentries observed the movement and directed a battery of machine guns thereon and compelled a retirement with many casualties. !
Tho Shniighai-Nanking railway was torn up by Northern spies last night, causing a. suspension of traffic. One train carrying coolies was derailed, killing six. The bombardment of Nanking from Pukuw continues, guns roaring incessantly in a covering movement of ferries conveying troops across the river. There already has been a minor revolt among the Southern forces in Nanking.
