Heavy .shipments of coal, totalling over Ib.IKK) ions have arrived at Lyttelton this week from Newcastle and Westport, and a large number of waggons have been required in order to bring the coal' to Christchurch. Practically the whole of one shipment of Newcastle coal is for the Railway Department. which now uses New Zealand and Australian coal in about equal quantities.
The visiting Canterbury footballers were taken for a motor run to Lake Kaniei'i yesterday afternoon, the outing proving a very pleasant one and Lake Kaniei'i was looking its best in the bright sunshine. Last evening they were entertained at th pictures. To-night the visitors are being entertained at a
dance in the Soldiers’ Hall, ami they go on to G reymoiit h to-morrow morning to catch I lie train for Chrisfchmlcli on Monday morning on the homeward journey. The annual Hospital Rail, the special event of the dancing year takes place in the Drill Hall on Wednesday evening next. As is usual each year a very strong committee ol ladies have the preparations in hand and this year’s gathering promises to he equally as successful as those of previous years. This year the function "ill ho a plain, fancy dress and paper event, and many novel dresses are
reported to he in preparation. The usual juvenile dance will tollow on Thursday evening.

An event in which much interest is being taken by the friends of the Grey-, mouth Sisters of .Mercy will be celebrated next Wednesday, namely, the Silver Jubilee as a religious of Sister Marv Anthony. On the occasion High Mass will be celebrated at S a.in. at St, Patrick's Church, and the Ci'ergy of the West Coast, as well as visiting members of the Sisters’ Order, will be present. On Tuesday afternoon the numerous musical pupils of the in hi hi ri.m will tender her a complimentary concert at Si. Patrick's School.
As the Soldiers' Hall is proving so useful to the community generally, a general desire is being expressed to have the front portion of the building completed finally. So far the Hall has been advanced a.s funds permitted, and with the earnings new works have been carried out or conveniences supplied. The addition of the front section of the Hall would add greatly to its utility, and the Committee is being urged to give effect to the suggestion. So far the matter ha.s been discussed only informally, and nothing definite has been done, hut the matter is likely to he considered by the Committee at an early date. It would lie possible to add a. considerable addition to Hip Hall in the front, and Hie extra roomy accominodation'would Prove very serviceable in connection with the many utilities to which the Hal! is being put.
