With the resumption of work by engineers the Arbitration Court commenced hearing an application for variation of the Engineers’ Award by the deletion on one clause and substitution therefore of a clause providing for employment by the'week. Applicants also ask for a provision that employment be terminated only by a week’s notice on cither side. Evidence was given that the men preferred weekly employmnt, as it provided sick and holiday .pay. All strikers except fifty have returned to work. Judge Bee.by threatened to suspend the hearing of the case if the men continued to absent themselves. SYDNEY LOAN. SYDNEY. August 24. "The Sydney City Council has completed negotiations for a loan of five hundred thousand sterling from the Australian Temperance and General Mutual Life Assurance Society, Ltd., bearing interest at the rate of £5 15s per cent per annum for a fixed period of twenty years. The i'oan is to he drawn by the Council in monthly instalments, spread over sixteen months.

BROADCASTING. MELBOURNE. Aug. 24

The Federal Cabinet have considered the report of the Royal Commission on wireless. Tt has not vet been made public, although it is known that it contains many drastic and important suggestions.

There is not expected to be any immediate change in the conditions governing the existing odganisation of

broadcasting. After exhaustively discussing the question of Government control, the report states that the Commission fa-

vours tlio retention of private enterprise, so that broadcasting may be developed along the lines already laid down, though subject, in a large measure. to Government supervision.
