CHINESE TROUBLE.

(Australian & N.Z. Cable Association.) STEAMER. FIRED ON. SHANGHAI, Aug. 24. Advices from Nanking state a passenger steamer was fired on by troops on tlie river bank and it returned to Hoojcliee. Later when escorted by His Majesty’s gunboat. Woodlark, it was again fired on. The Woodlark returned the fire and engaged the enemy with twelve pounders, and machine guns. The casualties are unknown. A heavy concentration of Northern troops is reported at Point Morreson midway between Chingiang and Nanking. A general attack is expected in about five days. Showehow was occupied by Southern troops, with heavy losses to the Northerners.
