POLICE DEPARTMENT'S STATISTICS. WELLINGTON, Aug. 23. With a. total of 31,615 cases, tlio offences reported to the police last year were 1145 in excess of the total for the year 1925 Police action hy arrest or summons was taken in 28,919 of the cases reported. The proportion of offences to population was 2.19 iter cent, against 2.16 per cent, in tlio previous year, while the cost of maintaining the police worked out at 5s B£d per head of population. These facts are set out in the annual report of the Police Depatrment, which was presented to the House to-day.

The Auckland police district headed the Dominion in the number of offences ils total being 8281. following which arrests or summonses wore issued in respect of 7299 eases. In Wellington 5350 reported eases were followed by

5004 arrests or summonses. the Christchurch figures being 30-50 and 3210. and those of Dunedin 1480 and ] 331 respectively. The principal increases in crime were:—-Undescrilied theft 806, theft and false pretences 108 burglary 211. vagrancy 234, unlawful use of horses, motor-cars. etc. 201, breaches of maintenance orders 706. and breaches of the Motor Vehicles Art 084.

There were substantial decreases in the breaches of the licensing laws. Dnmkenncss fell off by 424 cases, being on licensed premises after hours by 227, and selling liquor after hours b" 1 23.
