OIL BORE CERTIFIED. (Received this day at 10.15 a.m.) MELBOURNE. Aug. 22. Samples of oil taken, from a bore at Lake Biniga in Gippshmd. has been certified by the State Government annlyi.st to contain pure petroleum. A party of Government experts have left to investigate, the discovery. CARICATURIST DEAD. SYDNEY. Aug. 22. Obituary—Livi ugst- oil Hopkins, caricaturist. aged 82. VIEWS OX CHINA. SYDNEY. Aug. 22. Rcvd. F. Wilkinson, of the New Zealand Presbyterian Alission arrived in Sydney from China, on route to Dunedin. Rcvd. Wilkinson has been stationed at Kongehiieii, a few miles north of Canton. He says conditions about there, are eased considerably although missionaries had been recalled from inland stations in January, hut manv now are returning.
A SERIOUS FT RE. SYDNEY. Aug. 22. One of the most disastrous of fires in recent years gutted the whole island block of business premises, hounded by Foy Lane and Elizabeth and Goulburn streets. The buildings were occupied by a number of motoring firms and others. The blaze was very spectacular, the neighbouring premises of Washington. Soul and Pattinson. manufacturing chemists being severely damaged byfire and wafer. The damage is estimated between £150,000 and £200.000.
ENG INEER .S’ UNION. SYDNEY, Aug. 22. The engineers’ meeting resolved to instruct the District Committee to negotiate with the Industrial Registrar for the resumption of work on a weekly hiring basis. A further meeting is being bold to-day.
HOBART-BLUFF FLIGHT. BRISBANE, Aug. 22. The aeroplane in which Frcwin proposes ail attempt to fly from Hobart to Bluff is christened the “Storm Bird.” A trial flight made proved most successful. Two tanks with a total capacity of 150 gallons have yet to bo fitted to the machine. CABINET’S OFFER. -MELBOURNE, Aug. 22. Mr Bruce announced that the Federal Cabinet decided to allocate an additional sum of two hundred thousand sterling towards the development of civil aviation within the Commonwealth. The amount at. present expended is £115,000 yearly. Among the new air services proposed are those from Adelaide to Perth and Brisbane to Sydney.
ENGINEERS’ STRIKE. (Received this day at 8 a.m.) SYDNEY, Aug. 22. A largely attended meeting of the Engineers’ Union endorsed the action of the strikers, and decided that the fight he continued against the daily hiring system.
