PADEREWSKI’S LIKES. NEW YORK, Aug. 20
The New York Times ship news rejvsrter, setting forth an interview he had with M. Paderewski to-dav, just before the latter sailed for Europe, says that lie asked the virtuoso which of the two countries he liked better during his visit to New Zealand and Australia. The pianist, with a gesture, replied : “Oh„ New Zealand ! New Zealand very much more 1 The people there are nicer and more cultured.”
M. Paderewski then explained that lie had never been so sick in his life before, as during a storm that lasted twelve days before bis boat arrived in Austral in.
COTTON CRISIS. NEW YORK, August 20. Another .boom in cotton buying has sent prices to new high levels for the season, due to what is described as the most bullish ib oil weevil report ever issued by the Department of Agriculture Prices soared five dollars a bale, and held most of tbe gain to the close, the rush of buying being broken Only by the closing gong. The bollweevils :n Western Arkansas are reported to be more abundant than since 1923. The weevils have increased in Alabama., north and south Carolina, Texas and Louisana, with infestation ranging as high as 67. G per cent. The pest has destroyed the entire cotton crop in some parts of Alambama.
