FOOTBALL.

The finest match of the season has heed arranged to take place on Cass Square to-morrow at 3 o'clock between the Ashburton C ounty representatives and Westland. The latter team is really a first clavs team and should thoroughly try the visitors. The well known Maori representative. .J. Bannister. and .1. .McCleary. the well known half-hack, will be playing and both these players should he a decided acquisition to the local team. The big game will he preceded hv a first class curtain raiser with Westland Juniors pitted against their old rivals the Grey Bop Juniors. On the last meeting "Westland won by a narrow margin, and this ineetig on the local ground should he more than interesting. The spectators are in for a real treat the local half-back. M. David son, will he behind the scrum and patrons are assured of a first class display from the local lad. The Ashburton team arrived by last evening's train and were met by the President and members of the local Union and escorted to ihoii hotel. The Central. Last evening they were the guests uf the local Union at the pictures. To-day they were taken the round trip to the Rimu Dredge and afterwards to Lake Kanieri ami Ibis evening will he free. On Wednesday evening the team will he the guests of the Union and Ladies Hockey Club at the reception hall. The visitors will leave by motor on Thursday morning for Westport where another match will he played returning by Monday's express to Ashburton.

The team while on tour is under the management of Mr .James Smith of the National Mortgage Coy., of Ashburton, and they comprise all young members who after Saturday’s match against the Coast proved that they will be hard to dispose of. The game at Hokitika, being the visitors second game, they will he more accustomed to the Coast play and the game on Wednesday will he a much superior effort than Saturday’s.

The team is under a very heavy expense and the local Union will have to charge the sum of 2s for men and Is for ladies with a. sixpenny charge for children. This should enable the local Union to maintain its guarantee to the Ashburton team and offer them encouragement to come again. With line weather a big crowd should assemble on the Square and with such a. magnificent programme offered everyone should thoroughly enjoy themselves.
