IRISH AFFAIRS

<jOVERX’MEXT’S FATK SFAJ.FI). “DAILY EX I’ll ESS” VI FW. (Australian & X.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON. Aug. 11. There is tho greatest interest in today’s meeting of the Dai I Fireanu. “There is little doubt that the fate of Cosgravo’s Government is sealed,” says the Daily Telegraph. “Whether he will resign forthwith or wait for defeat on a confidence vote as proposed by Mr Johnson is uncertain. In all probability Mir Cosgrave and lii.s colleagues will confront the Mail with re-

signation.” Air Cosgrave said: “f am very pleased to see Air De Valera coming t<> the llnil. It is n tiling that has not happened in the last live years.”

Atr Johnson stated that it. was now possible to do what hitherto was impossible. From the tragic past, prepare a, happier future. The nation's need was governmental co-operation among those elements of political life who had not been active participants in the recent strife.

AIR REDMOND'S VIFW. DUBLIN. Aug. I!

Forty-three Fienmi Fail mem hers presented themselves at Government Mouse and took the oath. Astonishment is expressed at De Valera’s action, but it is apparently explained by the fact that though the oath says “I do solemnly swear,” Do Vnleroit.es propose to pronounce it as an empty tormnlity, conveniently forgetting that any change in the oath is subject to Britain's consent. There have been many political conferences in Dublin to-day endeavouring to untangle the difficult situation.

Air Johnston made all arrangements for tho taking over of ottice. If his plans mature, no Fianim Fail deputy will bo included in the Cabinet, hut it is expected that Captain Redmond will he offered a. post, and at least one Independent; as, with the Labour •Party in office, tile balance oi power will rest with Air Redmond's Party of eight. The Fanners' Party Inis also been approached, but is unlikely to join the coalition. Air Redmond, cor.imenl.ing on the* situation, states: ••The action of the De Valeraites is an immense gain to the Constitutionalists. 'i here is no objection if constitutional methods are employed in eliminating the* oath. If such concessions were lawfully attained it/would secure the establishment of peace and order in the Free gtate. I do not believe the authoiities in Britian. would interpose it as an insurmountable obstacle.” There was a sharp decline in the National Loan on the Dublin Stock Exeha.ngo to 95 . The prospect is that Ah Cosgraye’s Government will fie defeated by tom or fivo votes. •

IRISH POLITICAL AFFAIRS. (Received this day at 10.16 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 12,

There is not anything like the interest that might he expected in Dublin regarding the meeting of the Dail. With the exception of a full gallery and a small body of police and a moderate crowd outside the Rarliamentaiy atmosphere was normal. The Do Valeraites arrived at the House this morning and conferred at length with the .Labourites. When the Hail assembled “ business as usual” was the keynote of the pro-<-codings Ministers first answering questions.

Then Mr Johnson (Labour) asked ir the House would have the opportunity of raising a question ot confidence in the Government.

Mr Cosgrave replied : “ I understand a deputy gave notice of that yesterday. Wo certainly are willing to take a vote on Tuesday.” The Hail thereupon adjourned till Tuesday next.
