BEAU CAVALIER

A N.Z. CHAMPION. Beau Cavalier, who won the Grand National Steeplechase in brilliant slyi’e on Tuesday, has had a short but loJiiimtie racing career, so far as bis public life is concerned. The romance dales from October, 1925, when Mr A. G. t.luartley purchased him at the Auckland Show for £55. He won llie thiiTeen stone hack class and also .seemed the award of champion hack at Hie show, lie was afterwards hunted, and then his owner had him in camp as a trooper’s mount. Tbe racing career of Beau Cavalier opened in June'last year, when be was unplaced in the Hunt Club Hurdle Handicap at the Auckland Racing C lull’s winter meeting. Last August, at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting, be ran second to Pendavios in tlie Hunters’ Hurdle Handicap, and later l’n the day, starting ninth favourite in a field of ten, lie won the limit Cup Steeni’echase. His next start was in tbe Waikato Hunt Cup, in which lie fell, suffering injuries which kept him in retirement for several months. Since his re-appearance at Easter, be lias taken part in ten races. He was unplaced in tin* Autumn Steeplechase at Ellerslie, ami then, on tbe same course, hs ran third to Passiu’ Through and Glenotus in the Avondale Steeplechase. Within the following week lie won two steeulechases at the Waikato meeting. Next he won the Great Northern Stce»»erhase. carrying 9.7. with Alaunga 9.13 second and Kawini 10.10 third. On the last day of the meeting, he fell in the Winter Steeplechase. He visited Trcnthani last month and won the Wellington Steeplechase, while later in the meeting he was unplaced in the High AYeiglit Handicap and Winter Hurdle Handicap, in each of which he was one of Hie leaders to the .Straight. His next start was his successful effort yesterday. Loss than two years ago a show limiter, and winning his first hunters’ steeplechase only last August, while now the outstanding steeplechaser of tho Dominion, his rise to fame has been very rapid. It is reasonable tn expect a lot of improvement Cram him vek, so that he should he a great horse next winter. —“ Lvttelton Times.”
