The position in regard to the dispute between the Racing Conference and the Minister of. Internal Affairs and the Waikato Hunt, Club concerning racing oil Labour Day i.s that if the Waikato Hunt Club were to hold the meeting, everybody taking part' in it would he liable to disqualification miller the Rules of Racing. Oil the other hand, remarked a wellknown racing man, the Minister is on the box seat. He can withhold the permit for the Waikato Racing Club, or he can put through legislation, seeing he has the large majority of members of Parliament behind him. which would over-ride anything the conference might do. “I think they are very foolish to fight him.” he added. HUNT CLUB PERMIT. A COMPROMISE POSSIBLE? WELLINGTON. Aug. 8. The Waikato Hunt Club’s permit for a Labour Day Meeting is causing considerable discussions in political circles. It is stated that the Minister lias in his possession a document signed by a majority of the House ol Representatives who are opposed to the attitude of file Racing Conference. At' least 12 members have signed it. Competent lobbyists predict that il Sir George Hunter’s Gaming Bill now comes before the House, members may carry an amendment reducing the number of permits in flic main .rent res. 11 is suggested that as a wav out ol the difficulty a compromise may be arrived at.
