N.Z. FLAX CULTURE.
PALMERSTON X.. Aug. 4 Dr Marsden (Director of Scientific Research) and Professor McLaurin (Government Analyst) paid a visit to the flax areas to-day, to investigate the needs and jiossibilities iff Xew Zealand’s only native industry. Others jiresent were Mr P. W. Aitken (of Otago University), who has been set asido for scientific research in tlio processes ol" treating flax with .special immediate reference to more efficient methods of bleaching; Air Bernard Wood '(Cliristclnirc.il), and Messrs Aler Boss and Alfred 11. -V. Seifert, leading flaxmillers. The scientists expressed surprise at the wonderful results achieved in the cultivation of flax and the superiority in the field and quality over the plants grown in the natural state. It was recogised tiiat there were great possihilities of development of the industry with the assistance of scientific investigation, and the announcement of Mr Aitken’s sjiecialising in research gave great satisfaction to the millers. Dr Marsden promised that his Department would give all the assistance jxis.-ihle and its co-operation.
