A message from Clay, Kentucky, states that an exjilosion at a coal mine near there lias resulted in the death of sixteen men. 'They were trapped to-night as a gang of 250 men were leaving work. Sixty-seven men were killed at the same sjiot in 1910.

TRAVESTY OF JUSTICE. XEW YORK, Aug. 3. A Boston message states: Governor Alvan Fuller, of Massachusetts State to-night refused to pardon Nicola Sacco and Bartollomeo Vanzetti, who are internationally known as Radicals, and "ho were sentenced to death for the murder of a factory paymaster in 1920. The electrocution of Sacco and Vanzetti is to take place on August I.lth. as 'planned.

Governor Fuller said that lie lielieved that their trial was fair, and that the men were guilty. The only chance for tlie condemned men now lies in an appeal to the United States Supreme Court. Public opinion both here and tlirougho't the world Is against the decision. Sympathetic and protest strikes are threatened hero and abroad.

The decision of the Governor has come as a complete surprise, and it was broadcast over tbe entire world immediately it was announced, this being due to the enormous interest- displayed in the ease.
