THK COUNCIL. WELLINGTON. Aug. I. The Legislative Council met at 2.30 p.m. to-day. Hon Cohen moved for a return in regard to the cost of sites for secondary schools and technical school hotels, tilt* cost of erecting the buildings (heron; the cost of maintenance etc. The Leader of the Council (Sir F. Bell) objected that the cost entailed would be too great, and the motion was then withdrawn. Hon Cohen then asked for returns in regard to the increased adminstrative costs of the Head Office of the Education Department and the cost- of Educational Commissions since 1910. These motions were carried. Hon Newman intends to move that in the opinion of the Council it is of paramount, interest to establish a pig products export industry, and the question should he considered of remitting the Customs duty on maize and other food products necessary for the economical operation and development of that liuhiness.
The Council adjourned at 2.35 until 2.30 on Friday.
THE HOUSE. Tn the TTon.se tlio afternoon sitting was occupied with members discussing answers given by Ministers to questions put. by members during the past three weeks. At 7.30 Mr Lee (Auckland East) moved the second reading of the Compulsory Military Service Her which after being debated till 12.2' was. mi a division, rejected by 57 to IT. The House rose at 12.30 till 2.30 p.m.
