Y.E.C. FOR TOTE. AGAINST HIGHER WEIGHT MINIMUM. MELBOURNE, August 1. At the annual meeting of the Victorian Racing Chili, the Chairman indicated that the Club would support tlie introduction of tbe totalisator In Victoria if tbe bookmakers were allowed to operate, as in Sydney. He also staled that tbe committee, while sympathising with the trainer who had difficulty in securing boys who could ride at the present minimum would not favour a proposal to increase the- minimum of seven stone, as it would operate against the best horses.
CUT IN STAKES. AUCKLAND, August 1
The Auckland Racing Club to-day fixed its stake for the season at sixty three thousand pounds (£03,000) being a reduction of £'3,(150, compared with fast season. The principal reductions are:—The Newmarket Handicap was reduced from £IO.OO to £’800; the Fastci\ Handicap £2,000 to £1,750; the Autumn Handicap from £I2OO to £1000; the Great Northern Steeplechase from £2,250 to C2OOO, and the Winter Steeplechase from £1.500 to £1.250. A The sum of £10,(150 is allotted to the spring meeting; £20.050 to the summer meeting.
Eight races a day, compared with seven last season, and £IO,BOO to the autumn meeting and £14,000 to tho winter meeting.
RACFCOURSK incident. SYDNEY, Aug. 1
There was an unusual accident at the Canterbury Park holiday race meeting. The name of the favourite in the first race was hoisted on the starting board and after the horse bad been heavily backed, il was discovered that la l bad not reached the course. The name was then removed from the starters’ list. The bookmakers interviewed the stewards and asked to be allowed to declare the early betting off and to make a fresh start. The request was not granted. I lie liaise arrived on the course before the race was due to start, but the stewards withdrew him. as he had not reached the course within such a time before the race as the rules provided. The trainer explained that lie lmd in ranged for the horse to he there in time, but'the transport broke down. • Ihe stewards adjudged the trainer guilty of carelessness and fined him £2O.
