At the Magistrate's Court, Samuel Parsons, a farmer of Kairanga, was charged with ill-treating five cows and one bullock, by driving or permitting them to he driven from Kairanga to Longburn while in an unfit state, and also with causing these animals to be conveyed from Longburn to Xgaliauranga in a manner causing unnecessary suffering.
The inspector for S.P.C.A. said the animals hoofs, had apparently rotted oil', leaving the stumps raw and inflamed. Witness thought the trouble was due to fescue grass getting into the clefts of the feet and setting up poisoning.
The head drover at the Meat Works sait! that unless the animals arrived sound, they were quite unfit to be diiveu any distance, and were killed as quickly as possible to put them out of their misery. Counsel for tin- defendant said that foot trouble from fescue bad been, prevalent in the Karanga district. Seme of Parson’s cattle had been destroyed. but these six bad recovered though they bad lost their hoofs. They were sold as “boners,” and Parsons took three days to drive them from Karanga to Loiigbui'n, making special pads for their feet. 'lire defendant, in evidence, said the bad leet in every ease had become eallused over before the animals wore driven, and tho pads adequately pro tooted their feet, and he had done all that was possible to conserve the beast's condition.
Two neighbours testified that cattle in the condition in -which these ones were could be fattened, and that Parsons had not. shown any cruelly. A larnier lard to got. all he could out of his farm to make ends meet. The Magistrate said that, even * hough Parsons had bound up the feet bis action in driving the animals eight miles was unnecessary and unreasonable A line Ol twenty pounds was i rn posed.

MEAT COY MEETING. WELLINGTON, Aug. 1. At a mooting of the Goar A Ton t Coy to consider amendments in the article of association, nltering the voting power. Mild fixing the remuneration to chairman and the directors, there was considerable opposition shown. The lir.st motion (re voting power) was lost on voices. Edward Joseph Casey, aged 8» years, dying in the Waipukurau Hospital from lning severely crushed. He was in a hole around a post, when the.staying gave way through the anchors slipping in the very sodden giouud. The pole had to be jacked from the unfortunate man. who received prompt medical attention. He leaves a widow and one child. An impicst will be held to-morrow.
