KANIERI win senior cup
The final game of ike Most Coast senior championship was played at Grey mouth oil Saturday, when Kanivri by defeating Stars hy 11—9 become senior champions lor the >eai. The game proved a hard one. The ground was in good order, but a stiong southerly blowing across the field interfered with the play. Kanieri had a substantial advantage in the first half, after a sensational start in which Carlton scored for Stars in the first minute. Then Kanieri took the upper hand, and McOleary scored, George converting. Sbon alter Tainui scored and a little later Fleming scored as a result of a mishandling among the Star hacks. Neither try was converted and half time came with Kanieri leading by 11 —3. In the second half Kanieri continued to have the host of the play hut later the team tired and Stars took the upper hand, from a free kick Stevens landed a good goal and towards the end of the play Nelson got over to score. .Stevens failing with the kick. Stars were attacking strongly when time was called with Kanieri victors hy 11—9. Air Mclntosh was referee. Kanieri Seniors are to be complimented on their success in winning the senior championship. They have played consistent football, and generally their play has been of a good order. Their success has proved a popular one.
ox ( ASS SQUARE. The costume match between Excelsior A. and B. junior teams on Saturday afternoon attracted a good attendance and caused much amusement amongst the. onlookers. The primary schools match Greymoidlt v. Hokitika was played on Cass Square and resulted in a runaway victory for the Grey hoys by 35—0. The visitors were much heavier ami faster and well deserved their win. Tries were scored hy Watson (7), MeMa.ster (2i, Rose and Allison. Only one try was converted, MeMaster kicking one. In a basket hall match between girls representing Hokitika and Groyiiiouih schools Hokitika were successful hv 7 goals to .3. WEST COAST REPS. The following team lias .been selected to represent the West Coast next Saturday against: the .Maori All Black touring team at Victoria Park :—Fullback, Goodall : three-quarters, If. Jamieson. Houston and Reynolds; fiveeighths, Winnies and King; half, AleChary; wing-lorward. Hahn; hookers. Devalley and Bell; lock. Bannister; middle row. Freitas and Caultou ; hack row. MAORIS LOSE TO NELSON. NELSON. July 30.
In tlie Rugby match this afternoon the Maori team were beaten hy the Nelson-Golden Bay team hy 14 points to 11. after a fine open game, in which the visitors excelled in the hack division. and the local forwards in the loose. The Maoris failed to got properly going until well on in the second spell, when their hacks gave at times an exhilarating display, but sound defensive tactics kept down the score. The first syiell ended in favour of Nelson by 8 to 3. Soon after resuming the Maoris evened the scores, hut Nelson then led hy 3 points, which they maintained until the last few minutes, when the scores lieeanio again even. The concluding stages were exciting. The visitors narrowly missed scoring several times.
Tn the Inst half-minute, Nelson goaled from a penalty, and won. For the winners. Snodgrass scored all the 14 points, including two tries (one converted), and two penalty goals. For the losers tries were got by Lockwood. Pelham and Pika, one being converted by Hum.
Cl IRTSTCTTURCH CHALLENGE CUP 'CHRISTCHURCH, July 30. At Rugby football to-day, Christchurch Club, this season’s premiers, played Old Boys, the next in order, for the challenge cup. Carterton on “Wednesday August 17th. for the Ranfurly Shield Taranaki Union is touring the South Island to play Otago, Southland and Canterbury, and propose, if a AVairarapa match is accepted, to motor to Wellington from Carterton and join the south boat on the night of the match.

Following a week’s rain the ground was sodden, with sheets of water in places, whilst the game was for the most part played in rain, but both teams endeavoured to make the game open. For the winners scores were obtained by Huxtablc (2). Corkhill. and M. Brownlie; whilst Greenside and M. Brownlie converted one try each.
