(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) RIOTS IN ADELAIDE. ADELAIDE. July 24. A demonstration by the unemployed here almost developed into a riot when the police attempted to disperse a meeting nt which violent speeches acre being made. The mob attacked the police and an Inspector was felled and badly injured. Mounted police were called out, but they wero unable to get among the crowd, who were congregated in \ ictoria Square, owing to the railings. A strong body of loot-police, howover. removed the crowds as they came from the Square. Then the mounted police rode among them, and despite heavy stone throwing, they managed to disperse the crowd, but not beiorc many of t,ho troopers had been struck. An enormous crowd collected and at one stage the disturbance almost developed into a sevioos riot. There were many arrests. Mounted police arc now patrolling tho streets, riding two abreast. to guard against further disturbances. A number of those arrested have been scut to gaol for a week.

The Premiers’ Conference has concluded. Mr Bruce stated the Conference was highly satisfactory. Draft terms and personnel of the Royal Commission to enquire with a national scheme of child endowment has boon prepared. The Commonwealth declined to get administrative costs cf State Soldier Land Settlement Scheme, hut offered to consider to reimburse the State for additional costs, as against ordinary land settlement. The Commonwealth will immediately take up the matter with the States with the object of evolving the general principles upon which a final .settlement can he made.

TROUBLE IN CAIN STRIKE. BRISBANE. July 25.

Imiisfail Trades Labour Council lias declared black South Johnstone mill and farmers, and threatened to cut olf all food supplies. A meeting of farmers decided to accept this challenge and keep the mill working to the limit of their resources. Serious developments are expected, and additional police arc being drafted to South Johnstone.

Another disgraceful scene occurred near the mill, when a. inch of strikers stopped a cane train and began to pull the cane from the trucks, while they toppled others over. A body of police arrived and under then- escort *lll’ locomotive and six trucks reached the mill safely. The remaining 19, whii ' were completely emptied were placed on tho line by farmers and taken to the mill.
