NELSON’S “VICTORY.”

SOUVENIR FOR- HOKITIKA

Writing to the Chairman of the Hokitika Library and Museum Committee from England, Mr If. -R• Coulson, ex-Chairmnn of the Committee, now away on holiday says:—

“T am posting to you by tilii.s mail, what T thought would be ot interest perhaps for the museum. It is a piece of the deck of Lord Nelson s ship “Victory.” I can vouch for its being genuine for I was down at Portsmouth on the 11th .Tune and with a triend was shown all over the ship by one of the sailors stationed on board her. She is now in a special dock built for her in the Naval Dockyard, and is tiding restored. In order to take the weight off the hull, for where she is now she is to remain permanently. I l ,hey are putting in supports for the masts which will rest on the floor of the dock. To do this they were cutting a hole in the deck and seeing some of the pieces that had been taken out, 1 asked for some and got them. 1, saw 1 lie spot where Lord Nelson fell, and also where they carried him to 011 the deck below and where he died. This piece of decking came from very close to that spot.”
