NEW OIL-TANKER
TO FhY NEW ZEALAND FEAO. Half a ship and a submarine is till) appearance of tho British Imperial (til Company’s new 1000-ton motor otltanker “Paint,” which lm-s made a successful trial trip at Southampton. Tt is the first vessel of the type to fly the New Zealand flag. The ship is driven like a motor-ear, a central power unit driving all the winches through lines of shafting. Steam is employed only for the steering gear. The vessel was christened “ Paua.” which is .Maori for “ Shell',” tli" company's trademark. Sir Robert AYalev Cohen, managing director of the “Shell ” Transport and Trading Co. Ltd., points out that the company’s expenditure in New Zealand and Australia totals £3,000.000. The “Paua” was built by Harland. Wolff and C'o. It embodies the latest invention lor the safe transport of motor fuel, and eclipses all previous ships of its kind in accommodation for seafarers. The “ Puna’s ” first wireless message was from Sir Robert W a ley Cohen, who said that no country had given the company a warmer welcome than New Zealand, giving the company confidence in embarking on a vast enterprise. The development of roads woui'd encourage automohilism and ensure one of the finest ' tourist countries in the world.
