Ben Yen, Chinese proprietor of the Shanghai Cafe at Alildura, was struck down from behind with an iron bar lat-o on Monday night. His assailant, who was masked, escaped. Yen .sustained serious injuries, and is not expected to recover. Pools of blood were found in the cafe and yard. No arrest has yet been made.
WASTE IN INDUSTRY. SYDNEY. July 20. A Conference of Federal and State officials, education authorities and business men. convened by Air Bruce (Federal Premier), discussed the question of simplified practice and the elimination of waste in industry. The Conference appointed a Provisional Committee to examine as to the possibility of establishing an Association on the lines of the Engineering Standards’ Association. Tiie Commonwealth Government’s action originated in a conference held in February last under the auspices of the Engineering Standards Association. which had adopted resolutions emphasising the need for the immediate adoption of economies in production and business methods, and suggesting mat an organisation to deal with the matter should lie established in Australia. The proposed Association would probably receive a g.mnt from the Federal Government. -MAD JEALOUSY. (Received this day at 0.30 a.m.) -MELBOURNE. July 21. A shooting affray in a hoarding-house at South I ari a resulted iu the death of Mabel James, aged 22. a waitress, and Ronald Lee!:, aged 26. It is believed thill the shooting was done by I,eel, and that jealousy was the main cause, as lie was a former i'over of Miss James. They recently quarrelled. Mrs Mood, who rushed to the scene, was wounded and sent to the hospital in a serious condition.

Replying to a deputation, the Minister of Public W orks, Mr Webber, said the condition of Victoria’s finances were worse than for twenty-live years.
