The Board is of opinion that, policy should ho adhered to until nil the .streams are bridged, and in this view it is regretted that the widening operations suggested by Mr Seddon cannot he undertaken at present.

Before facilities could he given to allow of Post Ofliee Savings Hank accounts being operated on by cheques it would he. necessary to remodel the whole of the system, the Minister for I 1 iMiliioo (.Mr Downie Stewart) informed the Hose last Friday evening. The -Minister said he did not advance this as a satisfactory reason why the facility should not he given, but doubtless the Postmaster-Oeneral could give adequate reasons. The Post Office Savings Rank was intended to he a working men’s hank, and its operation was a very simple process. If the issue of
cheques on these accounts were permitted it would he necessary to provide fu.’i safeguards against fraud, and a very big staff would he required. Mr Stewart added that lie had discussed this question with the head of the 'Department recently, when he was making enqiries as to the likely effect on the Post Office hank of the increase in the private hank deposit rates.

The ladies who have so consistently run the Annual Hospital Ball arc reminded that the inaugural meeting for this year takes place at the Board room at 7 p.m. to-night. The funeral of the late Mr William Patrick took place yesterday afternoon. There was a good attendance of mourners including many in a very long string of motor cars. Tho services at the Presbyterian Church and the graveside were conducted by the Rev. J. W'. Hayward in a very impressive manner. During the week-end, T. 13. Baty’s motor garage .situated at the corner of Guinness and Tarnpuhi .Streets, Greymoulh, was burglariously entered, and a cash box, containing approximately £BB in notes and cheques, and a number of valuable documents, was stolen from the strong room; and about C2 was taken from the till. The lock of the door of the strong room was badly smashed, and had evidently been battered with a large hammer or a heavy metal instrument of some other kind, until it gave way. Tn doing this the thief must have made consideranTe noise, and it is inconceivable that this would not have been heard by somebody. It is presumed, however, that the burglar carried out this operation during the heavy storm which prevailed during the early hours of Sunday morning. The garage was opened for. about two hours on Sunday morning, and it was then that the burglary was discovered.

They ascertained that Scverino was missing. He was seen in Dobson about a week ago. hut the police also learned that the missing man had been seen later in G rev mouth. 'I hey are oi the opinion that the waliVt is that of Scverino. and fear that it may mean that lie lias been drowned in the Grey River. They have searched the river oil either hank ut Dobson, and nearer Greymouth. Sevorino, whose ago is stated to he anything between 27 and 30 years of ago. used to he rather poorly-dressed, wearing his working clothes and he was subject, to periodical mental trouble. The polite hope that anyone who may have seen Scverino during the past Tew days, will make known the fact.
