The Ibime Almister mentioned m a reply to a question from the member for Pn.hiatua that some steps "ill he taken to draft a specification in connection with dwellings financed by the State Advances Department, so that more New Zealand timber would be used. The Government Architect, the Public Works Department, and the Valuation Department bad all been consulted, as they were concerned in tile matter, and one question which had to be decided was the probable length of the life of the timber, in view of the period of the loan. The timber industry, added Air Coates had got into difficulties in the past because millers had not paid particular attention to a specification which met the department’s requirements. Now that ■file matter had been taken up lie hoped shortly to make a statement which would be satisfactory to the timber millers of the Dominion and bring about a syslom of building these houses entirely with New Zealand timber.
